ACS Recognized as the Bow Valley’s Workplace of the Year 2023

The team at Ashton Construction Services (ACS) is the beating heart of our business. We owe our success as one of the leading construction companies in the Bow Valley to the diverse group of talented and passionate individuals who work with us.

Since the business opened in 2014, ACS has become the most trusted construction management firm in the Bow Valley. Over the last decade, our award-winning company culture has stood out as one of our most important achievements thanks to our values-driven, family-oriented environment. In 2023, ACS was recognized as the Bow Valley’s Workplace of the Year at the Bow Valley Business Excellence Awards by the Bow Valley Chamber of Commerce.

We are proud to have a team of people who love what they do and want to contribute to the positive, caring culture we’re cultivating here at ACS. We’re on a mission to provide the best Alberta construction jobs and become the top place to work in the Bow Valley, and beyond. Our team is working to continuously improve the ways we support our employees, from diversity, equality, and inclusion initiatives to team building, lifelong learning opportunities, and exceptional benefits packages. In this article, we’ll talk about what makes ACS one of the best places to get construction jobs in Alberta and give you an inside look into our team’s core values and culture.

Alberta Construction Jobs that Put People First

Every aspect of our business revolves around our core values: Happiness, Relationships, Honesty, Accountability, and Passion. These values aren’t just ideas we talk about at our annual planning meetings. Rather, they guide the work we do every day. Our leadership walks the talk by consciously building a supportive workplace culture and offering construction jobs in Alberta with tangible benefits that reflect these values.

We know that work plays a major role in overall quality of life. It’s important to us to provide all staff with not only a living wage for the Town of Canmore, but also meaningful perks that help our team members and their families live well. We offer competitive benefits you won’t find at other Alberta construction jobs.

  • Annual bonus program through which we share a significant amount of our annual profits with team members
  • Affordable extended group health and dental benefits that include life and critical illness insurance with short- and long-term disability, paid 67% by ACS
  • A healthcare spending account completely covered by ACS
  • Three weeks of vacation to start, which increases with tenure (our tenure and retention plan includes more vacation time, employee appreciation gifts, recognition, and seniority)
  • Team members who are with us for a year can contribute to our RRSP matching program
  • Annual company events including a golf tournament, team appreciation, community give back, and seasonal events
  • Safe, new, and modern tools, equipment, and vehicles

  • Coffee, snacks, and drinks available at all times
We’re always open to feedback from our team about their experiences with us. We conduct quarterly surveys to check in with the team. The feedback that team members provide has a direct impact on the direction leadership takes going forward.

“What I love most about working with ACS is that the company lives its core values, which starts with Steve and the appreciation he shows towards the team. The best part is the people—we have a great team who are fun to work with.”

Creating Community through Lasting Relationships

We’re in the business of building communities through the construction services we provide. But community-building isn’t just about properties and infrastructure. A true community is a network of relationships between people. Our focus on community has earned us long-lasting relationships with clients, sub-trades, and other project partners throughout our home in the Bow Valley. Our values-driven approach helps us attract like-minded partners who share our vision for the Bow Valley community, which has enabled us to expand our impact and continue to grow our business.

Prioritizing relationships has also inspired loyalty and community spirit in our team. We have exceptionally low turnover rates which means new hires get to work with individuals who have extensive experience working construction jobs in Alberta. With this collaborative atmosphere, we’re able to accomplish more—and have fun at the same time.

Every year, our team rallies for Community Give Back Day where we donate construction services to a cause here in the Bow Valley. ACS also provides discounted services to local non-profits. Some of the organizations we’ve had the pleasure of partnering with in the past include Rocky Mountain Adaptive, Pine Tree Players, Spirit North, Friends of Kananaskis, CAMBA, Canadian Rockies Public Schools, Alpenglow School, Canmore Community Housing Corporation, as well as the Ralph Connor Memorial United Church

“ACS is a family-friendly company. The team is a family itself! I love the community impact ACS has. It’s rewarding knowing that I’m contributing to people’s livelihoods, even from behind the scenes.”

Laurie Cantello, Office Manager since 2019

Building Careers with a Team that Cares

Supporting the goals of our team is part of our vision for the business. We have big aspirations for ACS and through those pursuits, we hope to provide the space for every individual to achieve their personal dreams.

Our commitment to professional development sets us apart from other construction jobs in Alberta.  One of the ways we help team members grow in their careers is ACS University, a lifelong learning event we hold quarterly. Sessions cover many different topics from wellness education to safety training and technical skill building. Leveraging the Canada Alberta Job Grant, we also provide a generous training allowance for each team member. At our Operations Centre in Canmore, there’s a library where team members can browse and borrow books on a variety of construction and business topics. By surveying our team members quarterly, our leadership team gains insights on team performance, a rarity in the construction industry.

We believe that taking time to celebrate our team is essential for business success. The people who work with us love to spend time together and we make sure they have plenty of opportunities to do just that. Our Community Committee organizes regular events including our summer golf tournament and the annual holiday party. It’s also important for us to recognize hard work and excellence.

Each quarter, the team votes to give the ACES Award to an individual or team who has gone above and beyond to demonstrate our core values through the work they do. And, we celebrate work anniversaries with team shout-outs, quarterly and annual anniversary recognition and a different gift each year a team member has been with ACS.

“Steve is a rockstar boss and always has my back. I’m so grateful that I work for the best construction company in town.”

Claire Walsh, Site Superintendent since 2022

Prioritizing Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion

We strive to provide Alberta construction jobs where everyone feels like they belong. We know that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is an ongoing process of listening and learning. To demonstrate our commitment to DEI and ensure we can implement DEI practices through our business, we became a 2023 signatory of the Bow Valley Immigration Partnership’s Workplace Inclusion Charter program.

ACS is the first construction company in the Bow Valley to sign the charter. The program provides resources and training for organizations so they can take action on the commitments they make through the charter. Our team participates in annual DEI training to refresh our knowledge and raise awareness among new members.

We also communicate with DEI in mind, prioritizing the use of inclusive and plain language when we speak and write. We also have a dedicated Office Manager who oversees our DEI and culture-building programs to ensure that we’re meeting our objectives and providing the resources people need to thrive.

At ACS, we believe in building careers, not just filling jobs. Working with us means you’re a part of an extended family that prioritizes work-life balance, well-being, and professional development.

“We prioritize the happiness of our people and our customers over our profits, as we believe that profits come naturally when you have your priorities straight,” says Steve Ashton, President & CEO of ACS.
